About this episode

Originally Aired: June 16, 1953 Johnny Dollar #167, "The Emil Carter Matter," Johnny travels to Los Angeles to investigate the murder of policyholder Emil Carter, who was shot in his apartment. The prime suspect, Janice Late, was seen fleeing the scene by multiple witnesses, but she secretly contacts Johnny, insisting on her innocence. Against his better judgment, Johnny agrees to meet with her privately, promising not to go directly to the police. At a waterfront meeting arranged by a mysterious man named Frank, Janice tells Johnny her story. She claims she and Carter were planning to flee to South America to get married, but on the night of the murder, Carter suddenly called off their engagement. When she rushed to his apartment to confront him, she heard voices and then gunshots from inside. Panicking, she ran without entering the apartment. Johnny remains skeptical of her account, noting that she's behaved exactly like a guilty person would. With little evidence to support her innocence and questions mounting about Carter's hidden life and missing brother, Johnny faces a complex investigation where nothing is quite what it seems.
