About this episode

Originally Aired: March 30, 1954 Dragnet #241, "The Big Confession," finds Sergeant Joe Friday and his partner Frank Smith confronting an unsettling case when a young man named Paul Marcus walks into the homicide division with a disturbing admission. Marcus insists he needs to tell his story in his own way, carefully describing how he met nineteen-year-old Lorraine Farrell at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco during his vacation. He recounts their brief romance in painstaking detail, from eating prawns on the dock to visiting Strawberry Island, before finally revealing that he killed her. His insistence on controlling the narrative and his odd, meandering confession immediately raises Friday's suspicions about his mental state. The investigation takes a troubling turn when Frank Smith checks missing persons and discovers a report matching Lorraine's description, but with one critical discrepancy: the missing girl is only sixteen years old, not nineteen as Marcus claimed. Now Friday and Smith must determine whether they're dealing with a genuine murderer or simply another disturbed individual wasting valuable police time. As Marcus continues his strange, detailed confession about bringing Lorraine to Los Angeles, the detectives face the painstaking task of separating fact from possible fantasy.
