Lum in Hiding from Birdie
Jul 31, 2026 · 14 min
Originally Aired: April 22, 1938 Lum #24, "Lum in Hiding from Birdie," Lum finds himself in a predicament of his own making when a woman named Birdie Collins arrives in Pine Ridge expecting to marry him. The trouble began when Abner sent out photographs of Dick Huddleston, Mose Moots, and Ezra Seastrunk to applicants of his Lonesome Heart Matrimonial Bureau without their permission. To keep one particularly eager woman from visiting Dick, Lum impulsively wired her claiming he had fallen in love with her picture and wanted to marry her. When Birdie immediately wired back that she was on her way, Lum panicked and went into hiding. Now Lum is holed up in a barn loft while Birdie stays at Abner's house, patiently waiting for her intended to return from what she believes is a business trip. Abner attempts to manage the increasingly complicated situation as Birdie settles in, inspects Lum's furniture, and shows no signs of leaving. Meanwhile, Lum desperately tries to devise a plan to send her away, even suggesting he's moved to Alaska, while Lizabeth grows tired of their unwelcome houseguest and the entire town slowly learns of Lum's predicament.

Jul 31, 2026 · 14 min
Originally Aired: April 20, 1938 Lum #23, "Lum Patches Things Up," finds Abner in deep trouble after his misguided attempt to run a matrimonial bureau goes disastrously wrong. When Abner sends out photographs of married men including Ezra C. Strunk, Mose Moots, and Dick Huddleston to prospective brides, their wives discover incriminating letters in their husbands' pockets. Mrs. Moots threatens to leave with the children, forcing Abner to confess his scheme to prevent the marriage from falling apart. Now half the town is furious with him, and Abner sits in the Jotten Down Store with Grandpappy Spears, wallowing in self-recrimination. As Abner and Grandpappy argue about who's to blame, nearly coming to blows with a chair, Lum arrives and reveals the full extent of the damage. Mose Moots has been reduced to a henpecked husband, forbidden from attending lodge meetings and forced to do all the household chores for the next two years just to keep his wife from leaving. With his business partner and the entire community angry at him, Abner desperately searches for ways to patch things up and restore peace to Pine Ridge.

Trouble Because of Abner
Jul 31, 2026 · 14 min
Originally Aired: April 18, 1938 Lum #22, "Trouble Because of Abner," finds the partners facing the consequences of Abner's questionable business scheme for their Lonesome Hearts Matrimonial Bureau. With only female clients writing in and no male prospects to offer, Abner had the bright idea of purchasing photographs of prominent Pine Ridge men from Grandpappy's new photography business and sending them out to lonely women without the men's knowledge or permission. Now those unsuspecting bachelors, including Ezra Scrunks and barber Mose Moots, are receiving mysterious love letters from women they've never met and have no idea how these strangers obtained their names and addresses. The episode opens with Lum and Abner enjoying a peaceful spring day on the store's front porch, lazily discussing the beauty of their mountain town and the previous day's Easter celebration. Their tranquil conversation is interrupted when Grandpappy arrives with troubling news about the responses coming in. While some men like Mose are flattered by the unexpected female attention, others are growing suspicious about the source of these letters, and the secret scheme threatens to unravel.

Lum Doesn’t Know of Photos
Jul 31, 2026 · 15 min
Originally Aired: April 15, 1938 Lum #21, "Lum Doesn't Know of Photos," With the matrimonial bureau receiving far more female clients than male applicants, Abner grows desperate to keep the women customers interested. Without enough legitimate photographs of men to send out, he concocts a scheme behind Lum's back: having Grandpappy Spears secretly photograph local Pine Ridge bachelors like Dick Carterson and Mose Moots, then mailing their pictures to prospective brides without their knowledge. Abner insists this scheme is harmless and necessary to keep the business afloat while they wait for more male clients to register. As Abner and Grandpappy review the photographs at the Jot 'em Down store, they mock the few legitimate male applicants who have submitted their own pictures, including one particularly unfortunate-looking fellow whose buggy eyes and protruding ears make them howl with laughter. Abner keeps his sneaky picture-sending operation hidden from Lum, wanting to take full credit for saving the business once his partner discovers how successful the idea has become. When Lum arrives with the mail, Abner and Grandpappy must keep their conspiracy under wraps.

Abner Sends out Photos
Jul 31, 2026 · 15 min
Originally Aired: April 13, 1938 Lum #20, "Abner Sends out Photos," Lum and Abner's matrimonial bureau hits a serious snag when they discover all their correspondence is coming from women seeking husbands, but they have no pictures of eligible men to send in response. The only photographs they've been distributing are of Lum himself, taken from a ten-year-old picture, and now even he has decided he's not interested in matrimony. When Lum returns from the county seat with fancy new printed forms for matching couples, Abner points out the obvious problem: they need more male candidates or risk losing their female customers entirely. The situation becomes more complicated when they receive a scathing letter from Paula Reimer of Springfield, Missouri, who is distinctly unimpressed with Lum's photograph despite being told he's a millionaire who drives a big car. Her sharp-tongued rejection gets under Lum's skin, prompting a defensive reaction that suggests she's hit a nerve. In desperation, the partners turn to young Cedric, asking if he has any photographs they could use, only to discover he's saving himself for Clarabelle and his only pictures are baby photos.

Benefits of Being Married
Jul 31, 2026 · 14 min
Originally Aired: April 11, 1938 Lum #19, "Benefits of Being Married," the Lonesome Hearts Matrimonial Bureau is off to a flying start, but an unexpected complication arises when Lum himself catches matrimony fever. After writing newspaper advertisements extolling the virtues of married life, the lifelong bachelor becomes so convinced by his own sales pitch that he starts sending his picture out to female customers. When Grandpappy Spears stops by the Jot 'Em Down Store offering to take professional photographs with his new camera, Abner reveals Lum's true intentions, much to Lum's embarrassment. As the men gather in the store nursing cases of spring fever, Dick Huddleston and Grandpap enthusiastically encourage Lum's marital aspirations, painting an idyllic picture of domestic life where a man remains head of the household and can still do as he pleases. Their rosy descriptions seem to be winning Lum over, despite his admitted nervousness about giving up his independent bachelor ways. The conversation takes an ironic turn when Dick is summoned back to his own store by his decidedly unhappy wife, providing a stark contrast to the glowing testimonials about married bliss.

Lum Wants to Get Married
Jun 29, 2026 · 15 min
Originally Aired: April 8, 1938 Lum #18, "Lum Wants to Get Married," Lum and Abner's Lonesome Heart Matrimonial Bureau is officially open for business after placing newspaper advertisements throughout the surrounding territory. When Lum returns from the post office with their first letters from prospective customers, the partners are excited about the potential fifty-dollar profit from each successful match. However, things get complicated when Lum announces his intention to find a wife for himself through their own bureau, insisting he won't pay the company's twenty-five dollar fee if he does marry. As Abner handles phone inquiries from Sister Simpson, an eager local woman seeking a husband, Lum eagerly opens their first letters. While the partners initially dismiss one applicant who seems more interested in paying off her farm mortgage than finding love, their attention turns to Roberta Brandenburg from Gilgore, Texas. When Lum sees her picture, he's immediately smitten with the beautiful manicurist who owns her own beauty salon, sparking his interest in ways that have nothing to do with the matrimonial bureau's profit margins.

Lum Composes Newspaper Ad
Jun 28, 2026 · 15 min
Originally Aired: April 6, 1938 Lum #17, "Lum Composes Newspaper Ad," After managing to collect only $18 from overdue accounts at the Jot'em Down Store, Lum conceives a new scheme to make money. Rather than using the modest sum to restock merchandise as his partner Abner suggests, Lum decides to open a matrimonial bureau in Pine Ridge. A reluctant Abner initially resists the idea, preferring to invest their money back into the store, but Lum eventually wins him over by painting a rosy picture of helping lonely hearts find companionship and by offering to make Abner president of the new venture. As Lum composes their first newspaper advertisement, the differences between the partners become clear. Lum's flowery ad promises women they can marry men of wealth and position who will shower them with diamonds and pearls, while Abner worries the exaggerated claims will cause trouble. The conversation takes a humorous turn when Lum tries to explain Cupid to the confused Abner, who thinks the love-inducing cherubs sound more like mosquitoes or Indians and threatens to swat any that shoot arrows at him.

Matrimonial Bureau Reopens
Jun 27, 2026 · 15 min
Originally Aired: April 4, 1938 Lum #16, "Matrimonial Bureau Reopens," Lum and Abner find themselves in desperate financial straits as their Jot 'Em Down Store struggles to survive. With depleted inventory and mounting debts, the partners face a vicious cycle: they need cash to restock, but customers need credit to buy. When Dick Huddleston stops by the store, he advises Abner to enforce their long-ignored "Strictly Cash, No Credit" policy, but both men know it's nearly impossible to turn away neighbors they've known all their lives. Lum returns from a grueling day of collections having secured only eighteen dollars from Grandpa Masters, barely enough to make a dent in their wholesale orders. As the partners contemplate their dire situation, Lum's mind wanders to get-rich-quick schemes. He mentions reading about sweepstake tickets that turn a mere four or five dollar investment into winnings of a hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Despite their agreement to focus on the store, the temptation of easy money proves difficult to resist for two desperate shopkeepers looking for any way out of their predicament.

April Fool’s Day Jokes
Jun 26, 2026 · 15 min
Originally Aired: April 1, 1938 Lum #15, "April Fool's Day Jokes," Lum and Abner are back to running their Jot 'Em Down Store after a period of outside interests has left their merchandise stock seriously depleted. While Lum is out trying to collect overdue accounts, Abner struggles through an exasperating phone call with Wither, who wants to order items the store doesn't have in stock. When Granny stops by with a box of homemade candy, Abner nearly falls for her April Fool's prank, as she's filled the chocolates with soap to trick unsuspecting victims down at the barber shop. Meanwhile, Lum returns limping after becoming the victim of a classic April Fool's Day trick himself, having kicked a paper sack in the road that someone filled with a rock. The partners commiserate over being caught by the pranks, with Lum dismissing such games as childish. However, when Grandpa offers to share his candy, Abner nearly takes a piece before being warned about the soap filling, much to everyone's amusement as the April foolishness continues throughout Pine Ridge.

Abner Pretends to Be Sick
Jun 25, 2026 · 14 min
Originally Aired: March 30, 1938 Lum #14, "Abner Pretends to Be Sick," Spring fever hits Pine Ridge as Grandpappy Spears pays a visit to the Jot'Em Down Store with a tempting invitation for Abner. The fish are biting down at Big Eddy, the signs are right according to the almanac, and the Macmillan boys have been pulling in strings of white perch that would make anyone's mouth water. Grandpappy has his fishing poles ready and paints a vivid picture of sitting under that big oak tree by the riverbank while the cork bobs on the water. Abner is practically drooling at the thought, but there's one problem: he and Lum just shook hands that very morning, promising to finally devote themselves to running the store after weeks of neglecting it for outside interests like dinosaur hunting and making moving pictures. As Grandpappy tries to convince Abner to come along, the two men scheme about possible excuses Abner could give Lum. When Lum arrives at the store, Abner faces a difficult choice between keeping his promise to his partner and answering the irresistible call of a perfect fishing day.

Cedric Sells Chances
Jun 24, 2026 · 14 min
Originally Aired: March 28, 1938 Lum #13, "Cedric Sells Chances," Lum and Abner are still reeling from their recent disappointment when a professor from the State University identified their supposed dinosaur fossil as nothing more than a dead mule, dashing their dreams of fortune and fame. When Lum discovers Abner and Grandpappy Spears hiding in the feed room of the Jot 'Em Down Store playing checkers instead of minding the business, he's furious that customers are being ignored. Grandpappy, taking his role as chief of police a bit too seriously, nearly pulls his gun on Lum during a heated exchange about potential robberies in Pine Ridge. Just as Lum hypocritically settles in for his own checker game with Grandpappy, young Cedric arrives at the store carrying a punchboard and selling chances at five cents apiece. Lum and Grandpappy immediately recognize this as illegal gambling and warn Cedric he could get himself in serious trouble. When Cedric insists he's not profiting from the scheme himself, the question arises: who put him up to this, and where is the money really going?

Examining The Bones
Jun 23, 2026 · 15 min
Originally Aired: March 25, 1938 Lum #12, "Examining The Bones," Lum and Abner's excitement reaches new heights when a university professor arrives in Pine Ridge to examine the fossil they discovered in Abner's yard. While the partners have been charging admission for locals to view what they believed was a dinosaur at Lum's house, the professor delivers surprising news: this isn't a dinosaur at all, but something entirely unknown to science. As Abner discusses the discovery with Cedric Weehunt at the Jot 'Em Down store, explaining how the creatures lived millions of years ago and laid enormous eggs, Lum returns with electrifying information. The professor believes this could be the greatest discovery ever made on the continent, possibly even the missing link itself. The partners are thrilled at the prospect of going down in history as famous archaeologists, with their pictures in books and statues erected in their honor. As the professor studies the mysterious bones with his reference materials, Lum and Abner dream of being called Professor Edwards and Professor Peabody, though Abner modestly notes he only made it through third grade.

Trying to Assemble Bones
Jun 22, 2026 · 15 min
Originally Aired: March 23, 1938 Lum #11, "Trying to Assemble Bones," finds Abner and Grandpappy Spears hard at work in Lum's house, attempting to reconstruct the prehistoric fossil they discovered in Abner's yard. Using baling wire and a reference book on historic animals, the two men struggle to determine which bones belong where, debating whether the back legs should be longer than the front and whether they're looking at the right picture in the book. Their makeshift paleontology efforts prove more difficult than a jigsaw puzzle, especially when they realize they may have assembled parts incorrectly and still have leftover pieces they can't figure out how to incorporate. Meanwhile, Lum has gone to the barber shop to get cleaned up, anticipating the arrival of an archaeology professor from the State University who could arrive any day this week. The men are eager to have their dinosaur properly assembled before the expert shows up to examine their discovery. As they hide the extra bones they can't fit and worry about getting caught with an incomplete reconstruction, their ambitious venture into prehistoric science teeters between hopeful discovery and comedic disaster.

Prof Interested in Bones
Jun 21, 2026 · 15 min
Originally Aired: March 21, 1938 Lum #10, "Prof Interested in Bones," finds the old fellows convinced they've made an important archaeological discovery. After Cedric Wehunt unearths a bone while replacing dirt in Abner's yard, Lum becomes certain they've found the fossil of a prehistoric dinosaur. He purchases a book from Evelina that confirms such creatures once lived in the area, and he excitedly shares pictures with a skeptical Abner at the Jotham Down store. Lum has grand visions of either selling their find to a museum or joining a carnival to exhibit it, though Abner remains less enthusiastic about traipsing around the country with a pile of old bones. The nocturnal digging operation becomes increasingly complicated as Abner's wife Elizabeth grows suspicious about the nightly activity in her yard. Abner has already exhausted several cover stories, from digging for fish bait to searching for gold, and she's asking more questions by the day. Lum insists on secrecy and has even sworn Grandpappy Spears and Cedric to an elaborate oath. As the men continue piecing together what they believe is a dinosaur skeleton, tensions rise over whether to let Elizabeth in on their mysterious discovery.

Finding Bones
Jun 20, 2026 · 14 min
Originally Aired: March 18, 1938 Lum #9, "Finding Bones," opens with Lum and Abner back at their Jot 'Em Down Store, taking stock after the collapse of the Pine Ridge oil boom and their expensive foray into silent pictures. With Squire Skimp having refunded everyone's oil stock investments and their motion picture venture proving to be a financial loss, the two partners resolve to stick to running their store from now on. Their conversation quickly spirals into classic comedy confusion when Lum tries to explain the concept of not throwing "good money after bad," using elaborate analogies about horses and cameras that only leave Abner more befuddled than ever. Just as Abner finally seems to grasp Lum's point about avoiding bad investments, Grandpappy Spears walks into the store. Before the old-timer can even speak, the newly cautious Abner immediately accuses him of trying to peddle some scheme, determined not to fall for another money-losing proposition. Grandpappy insists he isn't trying to sell them anything, but the damage is done as the friends' hard-learned lessons about get-rich-quick schemes color every interaction.

Squire Gives Money Back
Jun 19, 2026 · 14 min
Originally Aired: March 16, 1938 Lum #8, "Squire Gives Money Back," The Pine Ridge Motion Picture Company faces a financial crisis when Lum and Abner discover their recently purchased camera can only shoot silent pictures. After trying to abandon the project, they find themselves trapped by contracts with local actors who threaten to sue for the remainder of their pay. Squire Skimp, acting as manager for the actors and collecting ten percent of their earnings, eagerly encourages the legal threats. To minimize their losses, Lum devises a clever solution: fulfill the contracts by filming the entire picture in a single afternoon, paying everyone by the day and keeping costs to around one hundred dollars. Meanwhile, tensions escalate over another of Squire's schemes. Lum and several townspeople have invested heavily in Squire's oil well project, but Lum now suspects it's just another con. The drilling equipment appears suitable only for water wells, not oil, and Squire shows no signs of actually drilling. As Squire approaches the Jot 'Em Down Store, Lum prepares for a confrontation about the fraudulent investment that has cost the community twelve hundred dollars.

Moving Picture Co Disbanded
Jun 18, 2026 · 13 min
Originally Aired: March 14, 1938 Lum #7, "Moving Picture Co Disbanded," The Pine Ridge Motion Picture Company comes to an abrupt halt when Lum and Abner discover their newly purchased camera can only shoot silent pictures, which are no longer marketable. As the partners gather at the Jot'em Down store, their attention shifts to Squire Skimp's oil derrick erected on Abner's property. Lum suspects the whole operation is just a stock-selling scheme, especially since Squire has no drilling equipment and built the derrick with flimsy lumber. Both men regret investing two hundred dollars in the venture, joining other townspeople like Cedric, who sold his prized varmint dog to buy stock. The situation becomes more complicated when Grandpa Spears arrives with troubling news. Sister Simpson is threatening to sue Lum and Abner over a contract she signed to work on the now-cancelled picture. While Lum dismisses the Pine Ridge Moving Picture Company as dissolved and brushes off Sister Simpson as a troublemaker, the partners may have legal complications ahead. Meanwhile, the community buzzes with other news, including the arrival of Ruf Wilkerson's new baby boy.

Volcanoes-Rotation of Earth
Jun 17, 2026 · 14 min
Originally Aired: March 11, 1938 Lum #6, "Volcanoes-Rotation of Earth," Abner minds the Jot'em Down Store while Lum travels to the county seat to view their first motion picture footage. Young Cedric Weehunt stops by, eager to see the films and confessing he secretly photobombed a romantic proposal scene by making faces in the background. The lighthearted atmosphere shifts when Abner receives a frantic phone call from his wife Lizabeth, who is terrified because Squire Skimp plans to drill an oil well in their side yard. Pearl, their educated daughter, has warned her mother about volcanoes and the molten fire supposedly burning at Earth's center, convincing Lizabeth that the oil drilling might puncture through and create a volcanic eruption right in their yard. Despite having purchased an interest in the well himself, Abner tries to calm her fears while admitting he finds such book learning nonsensical. The conversation spirals into a comical debate between Abner and Cedric about what holds the Earth up in space, with Cedric puzzling over a calendar image of Atlas supporting the globe and wondering what Atlas himself stands on.

Squire’s Promotions Oil Well
Jun 16, 2026 · 14 min
Originally Aired: March 9, 1938 Lum #5, "Squire's Promotions Oil Well," finds Lum and Abner celebrating what they believe is a brilliant business maneuver. The pair has traded the oil rights on Abner's property to Squire Skimp in exchange for being released from their managerial contracts, which would have cost them ten percent of all their earnings for a year. Lum calculates they've essentially saved themselves $100,000 if their new motion picture company makes a million dollars. The duo is convinced they've outwitted the Squire, knowing full well there's no oil on the property—just a spot where Elizabeth spilled kerosene in the backyard. Meanwhile, production on their picture is temporarily stalled as they await the development of their first scenes, shot at Sister Simpson's place with actress Hortense Brogan. However, tensions emerge when Lum learns that his co-stars have complained about his unusual acting technique of backing away during scenes to steal focus from other actors. The strategy backfired spectacularly when Lum backed completely out of camera range during Sister Simpson's long speech, disappearing from the shot entirely.

Lum’s Movie to Begin Filming
Jun 15, 2026 · 14 min
Originally Aired: March 7, 1938 Lum #4, "Lum's Movie to Begin Filming," The movie camera has arrived in Pine Ridge, and Lum Edwards is ready to begin production on his first motion picture. Lum has written an elaborate story where he plays Count Frederick the White Knight, a hero who saves his country and wins permission to marry Hortense Brogan. However, there's a complication: Squire Skimp has opened a theatrical agency and signed management contracts with nearly everyone in town, including Lum and Abner, before the partners realized they could set their own salaries as owners of the Pine Ridge Motion Picture Company. As Lum enthusiastically describes his screenplay to his partner Abner Peabody, it becomes clear his plot borrows heavily from historical events like Paul Revere's ride. Abner grows increasingly frustrated as he struggles to find a role for himself in the production, with Lum offering him only the menial job of holding his horse. The situation grows more awkward as Lum gives the best parts to others, including making Squire Skimp the king, while Lum dreams of winning multiple Academy Awards for his Pine Ridge production.

Squire Theatrical Agent
Jun 14, 2026 · 14 min
Originally Aired: March 4, 1938 Lum #3, "Squire Theatrical Agent," Lum abandons the Jot 'Em Down Store to focus on his new Pine Ridge Motion Picture Company, frantically making arrangements before the camera arrives the next day. While Grandpappy Spears and Abner discuss Lum's increasingly erratic behavior at the store, they worry that he's "going Hollywood" and barely takes time to eat anymore. Lum has changed his plans from an expensive war picture with camels and elephants to a love story where he'll play the hero saving Cedric's sister, Catherine Hortense Brockway. However, he can't locate his secretary Cedric, who has the appointment book, leaving Lum unsure when he's supposed to do anything, including eat lunch. The situation grows more complicated when Lum discovers that Squire Skimp has signed up everyone in town as their theatrical agent, meaning Lum must hire all actors through Squire. As Lum brainstorms increasingly absurd rescue scenarios—from tying Catherine to railroad tracks to saving her from a ten-story burning building—he eventually considers making himself a scientist who invents a world-destroying substance, only to be talked out of using it by his leading lady.

Jun 13, 2026 · 14 min
Originally Aired: March 2, 1938 Lum #2, "Writing Script for War Movie," finds Lum Edwards consumed with grandiose plans for the Pine Ridge Motion Picture Company's first production. While his partner Abner waits at the Jot 'Em Down Store growing increasingly frustrated, Lum is out hunting for a white horse to ride in the war picture he's writing himself. In his script, Lum has cast himself as a hero general who captures entire armies single-handedly and marries a queen, while relegating Abner to the lowly role of his orderly who must keep his boots greased. As Grandpap Spears and Abner discuss the situation, Abner's irritation builds. He reminds Grandpap that he owns half the company stock and deserves to be a general too if Lum gets to be one. When Dick Huddleston stops by trying to find Lum and talk some sense into him about wasting their twelve hundred dollars in savings, he warns that they can't compete with Hollywood and don't know the first thing about making pictures. Meanwhile, phone calls come in about white horses as word spreads about Lum's quest, and the ambitious production continues to take shape despite everyone's skepticism.

Originally Aired: February 28, 1938 Lum #1, "Pine Ridge Moving Picture Co," Lum and Abner have pooled together $1,200 to launch the Pine Ridge Motion Picture Company, and excitement fills the Jot 'Em Down Store as they plan their first production. While continuing to run their general store until the venture proves successful, Lum busily telegrams Hollywood for secondhand camera equipment and works to find the perfect story for their debut film. Abner, who has $600 invested, worries about costs and returns, but Lum assures him they'll save money wherever possible before moving on to "super gigantic colossal" productions. The partners debate which story to film, considering everything from Gone with the Wind to the Chicago Fire before settling on their own version of the popular Snow White. Lum proposes outdoing the original with "Snow White and Eighteen Dwarfs," casting local Pine Ridge residents in the roles. Doc Miller, Sneezy Jim Williams with his hay fever, and the perpetually sleeping Luke Spears are all assigned parts, while Abner insists on playing Dopey since he has more money invested than Cedric Weehunt. As they finalize their casting, Lum reveals his own plans to play the prince opposite Catherine Brogan's Snow White.

Originally Aired: September 27, 1935 In Lum & Abner #205, "Squire Returns for Trial With New Business Venture," tension fills the air as Lum awaits the return of Squire Skimp, the smooth-talking promoter whose fraudulent mining stock scheme has landed Lum in legal hot water. With his trial looming next week, Lum's only hope for acquittal is to produce Squire as evidence. When Constable Abner returns from the county seat with the prisoner, Lum and Grandpappy Spears are shocked to discover that Abner has allowed Squire to stop at his own house unguarded. Lum immediately assumes the worst, certain that the notorious conman has escaped out the back door. Despite Lum's fury and Grandpappy's skepticism, Abner insists that Squire came willingly and even claims to be innocent of any wrongdoing. The wily Squire maintains that the mine is legitimate and blames Lum's mismanagement for the troubles. As Lum steams over Squire badmouthing him behind his back, he prepares for a confrontation when Squire arrives at his door, determined to make the silver-tongued promoter admit his guilt.
