About this episode

Originally Aired: March 13, 1939 Lux Radio Theater #210, "So Big," presents the story of Selina Peake, a young woman thrust into harsh circumstances after her gambler father is killed in a brawl. Left with only seventy dollars and facing an uncertain future in 1908 Chicago, Selina takes a teaching position at a country school in High Prairie, boarding with the Poole family on their cabbage farm. Despite the spartan conditions and grueling farm life, Selina finds beauty in the fields around her, seeing the cabbages as jade and burgundy rather than mere crops. She forms a special connection with twelve-year-old Rolf Poole, a boy with artistic dreams who has been pulled from school to work the farm. Selina recognizes his potential and tries to nurture his love of reading and drawing, even as his father insists he must labor in the fields. As Selina settles into rural life and prepares to attend her first church social, she begins her journey as the brave woman who will face love, struggle, and ultimately triumph.
