About this episode
Originally Aired: May 3, 1954 Suspense #550, "The Giant of Thermopylae," presents the story of Jim Walters, a riveter and self-described brawler who walks out of a small-town jail after spending the night cooling off from a bar fight. Walt insists he was innocent this time, that the other man started the trouble, but the local constable warns him to leave town and stop looking for fights. Instead of moving on, Walt considers tracking down his antagonist for another confrontation. Outside the jailhouse, he's approached by Mary Jane Kennedy, a young woman who witnessed the previous night's altercation and insists Walt was defending her. She thanks him for his help and invites him to her apartment near the local fun park. As their conversation unfolds in Mary Jane's dingy apartment overlooking the amusement park, tensions begin to rise. Walt's rough manner clashes with Mary Jane's nervous gratitude, and it becomes clear that something more complicated than a simple thank-you is at play. The situation grows increasingly uncomfortable as Walt demands a drink and Mary Jane's true motives remain mysterious, setting the stage for a confrontation with someone she mentions only as Tim.
