About this episode

Originally Aired: December 27, 1955 Suspense #630, "The Mystery of the Marie Celeste," presents a chilling explanation for one of history's greatest maritime mysteries. Sam Newcomb boards the brigantine Mary Celeste as a stowaway, hiding in the cargo hold for two days before presenting himself to Captain Briggs. Tortured by guilt over killing a young woman named Grace in a fit of jealous rage, Newcomb initially intends to confess his crime. However, when he discovers the captain's wife shares the victim's name and shows him unexpected kindness, he loses his nerve and instead claims he fled New York over a broken heart. The captain's wife persuades her husband to give Newcomb a chance, assigning him to work with the crew. As the Mary Celeste sails toward Naples, Newcomb endures brutal treatment from the other sailors, particularly a menacing deckhand named Hubbard who blames Newcomb for getting him in trouble with the captain. Despite constant beatings, Newcomb refuses to fight back, terrified of his own capacity for violence. When he awakens one night to find Hubbard standing over his bunk with an unsettling smile, Newcomb realizes something sinister is unfolding aboard the doomed vessel.
