About this episode
Originally Aired: February 6, 1940 Cavalcade of America #173, "Jean Laffite," presents a pivotal moment during the War of 1812 when America faces its darkest hour. General Andrew Jackson anxiously awaits intelligence about British General Packenham's approaching fleet of fifty warships carrying 10,000 battle-hardened troops fresh from defeating Napoleon. Jackson's hastily assembled militia camp in the Louisiana swamps seems hopelessly unprepared, and the general fumes over Governor Claiborne's warnings about not only the British threat but also the activities of a notorious French pirate named Jean Laffite. In vibrant New Orleans, Laffite himself holds court at a sidewalk café, conducting his smuggling business with charm and generosity. Despite the governor's proclamation offering $500 for his capture, Laffite remains unconcerned, beloved by the city's merchants and common people alike. Accompanied by his loyal associate Gambio, he distributes money to street urchins and the church while planning his next ventures. When Laffite discovers that Governor Claiborne has arrested his brother Pierre, the charismatic privateer must decide how to respond to this direct challenge to his freedom and family.
