About this episode

Originally Aired: October 21, 1936 In Cavalcade of America #54, "John Winthrop Pioneer Of Chemical Of Science," the story follows John Winthrop the younger, eldest son of Massachusetts' first governor, as he establishes America's first chemical laboratory in 1635 Boston. Working amid kettles and pots in his simple home, Winthrop conducts experiments to produce potash for soap while his wife Elizabeth laments the difficulties of colonial life. His neighbor Edwin Barthley dismisses his chemical work as foolishness, insisting he should focus on practical tasks like clearing land and planting crops. Despite the skepticism, Winthrop perseveres and successfully creates serviceable soap, pitch, and tar for the struggling colony. The central conflict erupts when a long-overdue supply ship from England finally arrives after six months. The desperate colonists, who have been waiting for essential items like seed wheat, nails, and tools, discover they've received less than half of what they ordered and paid for with their furs and hides. Winthrop finds his requested scientific instruments are also missing. The angry settlers demand answers from the ship's captain, forcing Governor Winthrop to call an emergency council meeting to investigate what appears to be fraud or theft.
