About this episode

Originally Aired: January 20, 1937 Cavalcade of America #66, "Songs Of The Sea," transports listeners to the golden age of American clipper ships in the 1850s. Young John Lawson, inspired by the legacy of his seafaring father and the stirring shanty songs of sailors, prepares to embark on his first voyage as an apprentice aboard the legendary Flying Cloud under the command of Captain Creasy, his late father's trusted friend. His widowed mother, though worried about losing her son to the sea just as she lost her husband, gives her blessing for John to pursue his destiny. As the Flying Cloud prepares to race the rival clipper Sea Witch out of New York harbor and around Cape Horn to San Francisco, John must prove himself worthy among the hardened crew. The episode follows John's transformation from eager landlubber to true seaman as he faces the demanding tests of life aboard a clipper ship. He works the towering yard arms in dangerous squalls and must endure the traditional crossing-the-line ceremony when the Flying Cloud reaches the equator, where King Neptune's court initiates him into the brotherhood of sailors through ancient maritime rituals.
