About this episode

Originally Aired: December 15, 1937 Cavalcade of America #113, "The Glory Of The Vanquished," tells the inspiring story of Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau, founder of the Adirondack Cottage Sanatorium. After being diagnosed with tuberculosis in 1873 by Dr. Janeway, young Dr. Trudeau receives what amounts to a death sentence. With no known cure for the disease that killed his own brother, he retreats to the Adirondack woods at Paul Smith's Hotel, a place where he once enjoyed hunting and fishing, to spend what he believes are his final months. Against all expectations, the mountain air and outdoor living begin to restore his health, giving him hope where none existed before. When his family joins him for a winter in the mountains, they face harrowing challenges, including a dangerous blizzard that overturns their sleigh and leaves them stranded in the snow. Yet even in these desperate moments, Dr. Trudeau shares with his wife Lottie a remarkable dream: establishing a sanatorium in Saranac where tuberculosis patients can experience the same healing he has found in the fresh air and peaceful surroundings of the Adirondacks.
