About this episode
Originally Aired: April 3, 1939 Cavalcade of America #159, "The Pioneer Mother Eliza Ann Brooks," tells the true story of a determined Michigan mother who refuses to simply wait for her husband's return from California. When Eliza Ann receives a letter from George Brooks, who left two years earlier to seek better health and fortune, she makes an audacious decision that shocks her neighbors: she will pack up her six children and journey west to join him. Despite warnings from townspeople like Tom Snow, who calls her "the craziest woman in the hall of Michigan," Eliza Ann loads her prairie schooner and sets out with her family. The journey tests her resolve immediately. After reaching Council Bluffs, all six children fall ill with measles, delaying their departure. When her hired driver Jeb Hardy abandons them after hearing frightening stories about hostile Indians on the plains, Eliza Ann faces a critical decision. With frightened children, no driver, and dangerous territory ahead, she must choose between returning home defeated or pressing forward. Guided by her motto, "Where there is no vision, the people perish," Eliza Ann's faith and determination are put to the ultimate test as she contemplates leading her family across the treacherous frontier alone.
