About this episode
Originally Aired: December 9, 1936 Cavalcade of America #60, "The Story Of Christmas Seals," tells the inspiring tale of how a simple idea becomes a nationwide health crusade. In 1907 Wilmington, Delaware, Emily Bissell, secretary of the local Red Cross, faces a heartbreaking crisis when young Johnny Lang develops tuberculosis but cannot enter the pavilion for treatment because the facility is closing due to lack of funds. Dr. Wales, who founded the pavilion, challenges Emily to find a solution, explaining that tuberculosis is a preventable pestilence requiring public education and support. The problem seems insurmountable during the busy Christmas season when people are too preoccupied with holiday preparations to think about charity. Inspired by an article about Denmark's charitable stamp program, Emily conceives a bold idea: Christmas seals that people can purchase and place on their holiday cards and letters. Despite having no government support, limited funds for printing, and fears that townspeople will dismiss her plan as foolish, Emily resolves to move forward. Haunted by the thought of Johnny Lang and other sick children who desperately need help, she decides to launch what will become one of America's most successful public health campaigns.
