About this episode

Originally Aired: May 5, 1941 Cavalcade of America #225, "The Trials And Triumphs Of Horatio Alger," The episode traces the early life of Horatio Alger, Jr., the beloved author whose rags-to-riches stories inspired generations of American youth. Young Horatio faces a stern, unyielding father who destroys his block tower and demands the boy devote himself entirely to rigorous classical studies rather than play or creative pursuits. As Horatio grows, the conflict deepens when he wins a Harvard essay contest but gives the prize money to his needy landlord instead of traveling to Europe. When he announces his intention to marry his sweetheart Patience and pursue a career as a writer rather than become a minister, his father explodes in fury. Mr. Alger forbids the marriage and dismisses his son's early books for boys as worthless platitudes, insisting Horatio lacks the talent to become a true author. Undeterred, young Horatio declares his independence and vows to study with the great writers in Paris, determined to prove himself despite his father's crushing disapproval and the personal sacrifices that lie ahead.
