About this episode
Originally Aired: July 8, 1936 In Cavalcade of America #39, "Victor Herbert - Master of Melody," the program traces the remarkable life of composer Victor Herbert from his humble beginnings in Dublin through his rise to become America's master of melody. Born the grandson of famous poet Samuel Lover, young Victor shows early musical promise that leads him to study in Germany under the great masters. His grandmother encourages his talents, and he eventually becomes first cellist at a European opera company, where he meets and falls in love with a talented soprano who will become his wife. The story follows Herbert's journey to America, where he becomes a citizen and begins composing the operettas that will make him famous, including The Fortune Teller, Naughty Marietta, and The Red Mill. A central conflict arises when a prominent New York music magazine attacks his musical honesty, leading Herbert to sue for libel. Throughout his career, Herbert pursues two great ambitions: to write an opera for the Metropolitan and an operetta about Ireland. The narrative chronicles his triumphs and setbacks, including the premiere of his grand opera Natoma, as he adapts to changing musical tastes while maintaining his reputation as a beloved composer.
