About this episode

Originally Aired: April 26, 1949 Philo Vance #42, "Cipher Murder Case," begins on a quiet night patrol as officers Mike and his partner cruise through an affluent neighborhood, admiring the grand houses and dreaming of an easier life. Their peaceful shift is shattered when they spot two men emerging from a large residence, hastily shoving guns into their pockets. A frantic chase and shootout ensue, but the situation takes a bizarre turn when one criminal turns his weapon on his own partner, killing him before escaping into the night. The wounded accomplice lies dead in the street, leaving the patrolmen with more questions than answers. Among the deceased man's belongings, they discover a cryptic clue: a slip of paper bearing only two mysterious words—"Live on." With a killer on the loose, a botched robbery, and an inexplicable murder between thieves, the stage is set for Philo Vance to unravel this puzzling cipher and determine what deadly secret lies behind those two enigmatic words.
