About this episode

Originally Aired: May 19, 1941 Cavalcade of America #227, "David Crockett," In this enchanting episode, Davy Crockett finds himself in an unusual predicament: trying to prove he deserves a place on a special cloud in heaven reserved only for American legends. There, he encounters the likes of John Henry, Daniel Boone, Huckleberry Finn, and Johnny Appleseed, who demand he prove his legendary status. With characteristic frontier charm, Davy begins recounting his life story, from his humble upbringing in Tennessee to his courtship of Polly Finley. Despite her parents' objections, young Davy boldly rides up to claim his bride, whisking her away to be married. As Davy continues his tale, he describes the hardships that followed: Polly's death leaving him with three young children, his practical courtship of the widow Mrs. Patton, and their move westward to Shoal Creek. When the frontier community establishes formal government and Davy is appointed magistrate, he faces an embarrassing obstacle—he cannot read or write. The skeptical legends listening to his story remain unconvinced, challenging Davy to reveal more impressive exploits if he hopes to earn his place among them.
