About this episode
Originally Aired: May 20, 1941 Fibber McGee & Molly #288, "Fibber Bakes Molly A Cake," Fibber McGee is determined to celebrate Molly's birthday in proper style by baking her a cake with his own hands, despite her gentle protests and offer to simply buy one from the bakery. Armed with a cookbook and unwavering confidence, Fibber sets to work in the kitchen while Molly watches with a mixture of love and skepticism. His unconventional cooking methods quickly become apparent as he separates eggs by putting them on different shelves, oils the egg beater with sewing machine oil mixed with vanilla, and contemplates using tin snips to create a quarter teaspoon measure. As Fibber works on his creation, visitors drop by 79 Wistful Vista, including the Old Timer selling used Christmas card stamps and the formidable Mrs. Uppington. The proceedings are interrupted by Fibber's colorful reminiscences about his past career as a vegetable and fruit man in Peoria, where he claims he was known as "Dead Beat McGee" for his ability to revive wilted plants. Through all the chaos and questionable culinary decisions, Fibber remains undaunted in his mission to create a memorable birthday cake for his beloved Molly.
