A routine burglary turns deadly when a fleeing criminal murders a police officer who stops to question him about a stolen car. Now wanted for murder, the fugitive calling himself John Dixon races across state lines, changing transportation, identities, and appearances in an effort to stay one step ahead of the law. With little more than witness recollections and a boast about appearing in a detective magazine, FBI agents painstakingly reconstruct his movements from Florida to Georgia, Chicago, and ultimately Omaha. As each seemingly insignificant clue narrows the search, the nationwide manhunt closes in on a killer who believes constant motion can keep him beyond the reach of justice.
