About this episode

Originally Aired: February 24, 1939 The Lone Ranger #949, "Great Winston Repertory Company," finds a traveling theater troupe performing in the mining town of Sumner, where the miners eagerly embrace the cultured entertainment. Among the players is the beautiful actress Nora Stevens, who has come west not just to perform but to search for her missing brother Bob, who disappeared five years ago seeking his fortune in gold and silver. The powerful and wealthy Carl Mead has taken a romantic interest in Nora, persistently courting her with buggy rides and proposing marriage. He tries to convince the penniless actress that being his wife would give her the resources to find her lost brother, but Nora remains uncertain about his intentions and troubled by a strange feeling that the townspeople are hiding something about Bob. When the Lone Ranger and Tonto arrive at a spring outside Sumner, an old timer warns them about Mead's influence in town, describing him as the real law in these parts. As Mead arrives with Nora in his buggy, the stage is set for the masked rider to uncover what secrets this mining town and its dominant boss are concealing.
