When ranch owner Mustang Mag reads the message supposedly from the Lone Ranger himself, she stuns everyone by agreeing to buy Higgins' entire flock of sheep for cash. Her decision sends shockwaves through the Pecos region, where cattlemen have banded together to keep sheep off the open range. Even Missouri, her loyal top hand, pleads with her to reconsider, warning that the purchase violates their agreement with the cattlemen's association and will destroy her hard-won reputation. As angry ranchers storm Mustang Mag's ranch, threatening to drive her out for this apparent betrayal, tensions escalate dangerously. Mag remains stubbornly defiant despite the fury surrounding her, trusting that the Lone Ranger's instructions will somehow vindicate her decision. With the cattlemen feeling deceived and Mag's actions seemingly inexplicable, the stage is set for a showdown that will test loyalties and reveal whether there's more to this sheep purchase than meets the eye.

Despite warnings from her visitor Betsy Jane and her foreman Missouri, Mag believes Morton has finally buried the hatchet. The Lone Ranger and Tonto split up to investigate, with the masked rider riding to Morton's ranch in disguise seeking employment while Tonto heads to warn Mustang Mag. The stakes are high for Mag, who must get her cattle through the narrow Grant Pass to the railroad spur by the fifteenth or face financial ruin. With Morton's hired guns gathering and only one route to market, the stage is set for a dangerous confrontation that will determine whether Mag can complete her cattle drive or fall victim to Morton's schemes.

Judge Clay and the sheriff have already examined the handwriting and deemed the will authentic. When Tonto arrives seeking water and food, he becomes an unexpected witness to the confrontation. Curious about the man who wrote the new will, Tonto abruptly departs and rides to the hilltops where he lights signal fires to summon the Lone Ranger. The disappointed greenhorns seem ready to give up on their find. Outside the cafe, the disguised Lone Ranger stops Jim and Bob and performs a jackknife assay on their specimen, revealing it isn't fool's gold at all but valuable silver ore. He explains that Lucky deliberately deceived them, using a ring scratch test to identify the true value while pretending it was worthless. Along the way, they discover mysterious tracks following the outlaws—enormous prints unlike any horse, mule, or wild animal native to the region.
