Originally Aired: January 20, 1939 The Lone Ranger #934, "Law Of The Custom," the masked rider arrives at a critical moment in cattle country, where rancher Eric Badger faces financial ruin. When the government opens prime grazing land to homesteaders, Badger's ranch is threatened since he only holds title to a fraction of the range he actually uses. Enter Dirk Hawkins, a smooth-talking stranger who offers a solution: his men will file claims on the valuable homesteads with the best water holes, then turn them over to Badger for a price. Despite warnings from his foreman Scotty Campbell about the influx of strangers in town, Badger signs the agreement, seeing no other way to save his cattle operation. The Lone Ranger and Tonto arrive just as Hawkins and his associate Slim Dykman ride away from Badger's ranch. The masked man reveals a shocking truth: Dirk Hawkins is no ruined rancher from the Dakotas, but a dangerous outlaw the Lone Ranger has been trailing across the West. Badger refuses to believe the accusation, insisting his bargain is legitimate. As the homestead filing proceeds and Badger prepares to celebrate what he believes is his salvation, the stage is set for a confrontation between frontier justice and deception.

The president himself is counting on the Lone Ranger's help to make the western territories safe for settlers, and Custer has broken his solemn vow never to use the masked man's real name unless the stakes are impossibly high. The Lone Ranger and Tonto race through day and night to reach Colonel Williams' garrison before the troops depart. The tension comes to a head when Neil confronts his father at the corral, announcing he's leaving home. His father tries desperately to make him understand the value of honest work and the trust he's built, but Neil romanticizes Link and Rusty as "real men" with nerve, unlike those who stay "safe to home." The men, Bennett and Ransom, were discussing how mining engineer Charlie Phelps discovered the mine is actually worth fifty thousand dollars, with gold located in a side tunnel rather than the main shaft. They planned to buy it from the unsuspecting Faber for a fraction of its value. However, when the Lone Ranger examines the tunnel, he finds no evidence of recent mining activity or the gold vein Charlie Phelps allegedly discovered. The weathered rock shows the shaft hasn't been touched in months, contradicting the businessmen's claims about Phelps' blasting and excavation. As Hank realizes he may have been duped into purchasing a worthless mine, the masked rider must determine whether this is an elaborate confidence scheme or if there's more to the Blue Star Mine than meets the eye.
