About this episode

Originally Aired: March 31, 1942 In Fibber McGee & Molly #319, "Latherino Soap Contest," Fibber's eyes light up with dollar signs when he discovers a contest offering $5,000 a year for life. All he has to do is complete the sentence "I like to wash my dishes in Latherino because..." in twenty-five words or less. Despite Molly's skepticism about this being his ninety-seventh contest entry, Fibber enthusiastically dons an apron and tackles the dishes with newfound vigor, washing them multiple times while desperately trying to craft the perfect entry. As Fibber experiments with various phrases praising Latherino's cleaning power and pleasant scent, visitors drop by the McGee kitchen. Old Timer stops in trying to peddle his hand-dyed Easter eggs, and Mrs. Uppington arrives to witness Fibber's domestic transformation. The contest-obsessed Fibber remains focused on his prize-winning words, but when Mrs. Uppington helpfully adjusts his apron strings, disaster strikes. The visit takes an unfortunate turn involving Molly's cherished family dishes, some over a hundred years old, threatening to make this contest attempt more costly than profitable.
