About this episode

Originally Aired: May 5, 1942 Fibber McGee & Molly #324, "Sugar Substitute," Fibber sets up a makeshift chemistry laboratory in his living room at 79 Wistful Vista, determined to help the war effort by discovering a substitute for sugar. With wartime rationing affecting sugar supplies from the Philippines and other sources, Fibber becomes convinced he can reverse the chemical process that converts sugar into alcohol. As he mixes various concoctions filled with muriatic acid, sodium chloride, and other household chemicals, Molly grows increasingly exasperated with the terrible smells and potential damage to her home. The Old Timer stops by and makes wisecracks about Fibber's experiments, while Mayor La Trivia arrives to ensure Molly has registered for her sugar ration card. Fibber's haphazard approach to chemistry produces more disasters than discoveries, including accidentally ruining Molly's poetry book with tannic acid. Despite everyone's skepticism about his scientific abilities, Fibber remains convinced his experiments will yield results, even if he ends up discovering substitutes for rubber or silk instead. The situation grows more chaotic as Fibber's chemical mishaps threaten to damage everything and everyone around him.
